In this era of rapid technological development, in order to protect Chinese medicine, Dr. Yan Li Yi traveled across the ocean from Malaysia to study at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, working silently so that the essence of Chinese traditional culture can be passed on from generation to generation.

Traditional Chinese medicine is still in the initial stage of development in Malaysia, but recently, many students have left their hometowns and rushed to this department to study in China, and Dr. Yan Li Yi is one of the outstanding members.

01

From a 19-year-old girl whose knowledge of Chinese medicine only stayed in a simple medicinal shop in Malaysia, to the current doctor of Chinese medicine, Yan Li Yi has undergone 12 years of hard training. Recalling why she chose Chinese medicine at the time, corner of Li Yi’s mouth raised slightly: “I wanted to be a doctor since I was a child. After graduating from high school, I wandered between the two departments of Western medicine and Chinese medicine. Although the mainstream medicine in Malaysia is Western medicine, but because I prefer the concept of Chinese medicine that “people are a whole” in my heart, I chose Chinese medicine in the end.” From the joy on the face of Li Yi, we can know that she has never regretted this decision.

Li Yi can be so firm in her decision, part of it comes from the support of her parents from beginning to end. Once, her cousin was diagnosed with rubella and asked her for help when she was a beginner in Chinese medicine. After diagnosis, she prescribed a Chinese medicine prescription. After taking the medicine, her cousin’s rubella was cured, and she laughed that her skin was better than before. All right. This experience is undoubtedly a great encouragement to Li Yi who was studying Chinese Medicine at the time, and made Li Yi more determined in her choice, and now she has also obtained her doctorate.

During her 12 years of studying abroad, Li Yi devoted her precious youth to her studies. At first, Li Yi never thought that what she would embark on would be such a long journey to study. After finishing her undergraduate studies, she found that her love for Chinese medicine had exceeded her expectations. She felt that the undergraduate studies were still too few and too superficial, so she decided to continue her studies. Sister Li Yi believes that in the postgraduate stage, students can develop their thinking and clinical skills in Chinese medicine. The guidance of a mentor is extremely important in the learning process. During her master’s degree, she was fortunate to be a student of Professor Lian Jianwei, a well-known national-level traditional Chinese medicine doctor. She studied formulas of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Zhejiang University, mainly discussing the compatibility of formulas.

During the master’s degree, her research topic was Zhang Jingyue’s thoughts and prescriptions for treating irregular menstruation. From the research, Li Yi learned that ancient doctors also used the art of war to prescribe prescriptions. The ancients said that “the use of medicine is like the use of soldiers.” The prescriptions in Chinese medicine are like the formation of troops on the battlefield. It is necessary to devise various strategies to subdue the enemy; and Chinese medicine practitioners also need to properly apply and match several Chinese medicines in order to achieve the best. Healing effect, rather than letting a single drug dominate. In 2014, Yan Li Yi studied at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine for a doctorate degree. She chose the clinical basis of Chinese medicine and studied the four great classics of traditional chinese medicine. She followed his tutor, a famous modern febrile disease Professor Gu Xiaohong to study febrile disease.

To study medicine, you must not only remember the knowledge points in the books, but also know how to apply the knowledge to the clinic. At this time, students need to be guided by the teacher. Li Yi said: “The teacher is looking for a person with integrity and academic excellence, so that we can learn good character and knowledge from him.”

Senior said that on her way of studying medicine, several teachers had an important influence on her, including Professor Lian Jianwei, Professor Gu Xiaohong and Professor Li Zhizhong. Li Yi said that Professor Lian Jianwei often reminds students that doctors need to be caring, take care of the doctor carefully, and pay attention to pulse diagnosis clinically; Professor Gu Xiaohong often advises students, whether it is a person or a job Learning, we must grasp the core principles, so that we can do things well without making mistakes. With his profound philosophical knowledge, Professor Li Zhizhong told Li Yi that she should understand TCM from the perspective of Chinese and Western philosophy, cultivate TCM thinking, and use logical thinking to analyze the pathogenesis of patients. When talking about her teacher in the interview, Li Yi said many times: “All of this is fate, how lucky I am! I am really grateful for the teaching of the three teachers!”.

Li Yi is currently working in Beijing. In addition to visiting doctors in the hospital and doing research and development of Chinese medicine products, she will also participate in a wide range of Chinese medicine and Chinese medicine activities when the opportunity is ripe, so that the public will have a preliminary experience of Chinese medicine. She said frankly: “Although I am a small person, a small grain of sand, I can do my best to contribute to the extent of my ability. Whether I treat Chinese or Malaysians, my goal is to solve their pain. This is what my current duty and ability should do.”

03

Many people in society combine Chinese and Western medicine, and compare these two medicines. Although Li Yi devoted herself to traditional Chinese medicine, she held a more open mind to debate about Chinese and Western medicine, and believed that Chinese and Western medicine had their own strengths and did not need to attack each other. For example, the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine are internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, treatment of stomach diseases and health preservation, and in infectious diseases and critical illnesses, traditional Chinese medicine can also play a certain role; while western medicine has more advanced development in emergency and surgery. In addition, the prescriptions of Chinese medicine are all adjusted according to the patient’s physique. It can be said to be “tailor-made” for the patient, which is more suitable for the specific situation of the patient. Li Yi said that modern Chinese medicine practitioners need to learn a lot of Western medicine courses in the learning process, which proves that Chinese medicine practitioners have a certain understanding and affirmation of the results of Western medicine research on the human body. Traditional Chinese and Western medicine are complementary in all aspects. However, if the concept of Western medicine is compulsorily applied to Chinese medicine, or the concept of Western medicine is used to prescribe Chinese patent medicine, both of them will not achieve the best therapeutic effect. Regarding the relationship between Chinese and Western medicine, Li Yi compares human health to a house. A cat and a dog live in the house. The dog is responsible for maintaining the safety of the house and preventing thieves from invading; the cat is responsible for catching mice and preventing rodent infestation. . Cats and dogs cooperate with each other to play the role of maintaining the house together. The same is true of Chinese medicine and Western medicine. The two medicines should cooperate with each other on their own advantages, rather than applying them bluntly, so that doctors can better serve people’s health.

04

Although traditional Chinese medicine originated in China, it can serve all mankind. As a comprehensive medical discipline, Chinese medicine has advantages from health maintenance and conditioning to solving major diseases. For Malaysians, the existence of Chinese medicine helps maintain national health. According to the current health-preserving trend, many non-Chinese in Malaysia have gone to Chinese medicine for treatment, which proves that the Malaysian people do not reject Chinese medicine. In fact, patients don’t understand the profound disease mechanism, they are more concerned about the recovery of their own disease; seeing the effect, the patient will naturally believe that the medical basis exists. Therefore, senior is optimistic about the development of Chinese medicine in Malaysia and said that if the field of Chinese medicine research in Malaysia needs her help, she is of course happy to serve the country.

In terms of traditional Chinese medicine, not only can pharmaceuticals become a new hot spot for the country’s economic growth, the Malaysian government has also begun to have new controls on this. This makes the people more confident in the use of Chinese medicine. Li Yi believes that Malaysia has an excellent geographical location and abundant natural resources. Among them, many undiscovered medicinal materials are suitable for the treatment of diseases. Therefore, the research of Chinese pharmacy is also worthy of our development and innovation. After all, Each place has its own authentic medicinal materials. For example, aconite is still the best in Sichuan, and safflower is better than Tibet. Secondly, Chinese medicines are mostly made of herbal medicines. Malaysian Muslims and a few vegetarians can also take medicines with confidence. Chinese medicine can be said to be acceptable to the general public, but when certain animal parts are really needed in the prescription, the Chinese medicine practitioner should ask the patient’s opinion. In the future, the Chinese medicine sector in Malaysia can develop from clinical, medicine, education, culture, scientific research and trade.

Yan Li Yi participated in the key research and development plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology Seminar on the Demonstration Research and Development Project of Chinese Medicine Compound Health Products

Finally, Senior Sister Li Yi gave a sincere and heartfelt instruction to the younger students who are on this medical road or who are about to learn Chinese medicine: “If you want to learn Chinese medicine well, you must make great ambitions, read classics, and talk to famous teachers. , Multi-period, study Chinese culture and cultivate morality.”
