If a person stays in the same place all the time, what he sees will be limited. When you go out, you will find that the ways of getting along with each other, the way of doing things, the work pattern, and the living habits are quite different. This may be the charm of studying abroad.

Atty is a compatriot of Indian descent from Malaysia. She said that it takes a lot of courage to leave home and study in a strange country.

Since I’m here, I have to settle down here. Since you have chosen to take this step, you will work hard to move forward and make every step of your own wonderful. In college life, in addition to busy schoolwork, there are many things worth discovering. Maybe we will encounter people, things, and things that are precious to us. These bits and pieces will become our most treasured memories.

“I originally studied in a Malay school, but because of my good academic performance, I became a little defiant. My mother sent me to chinese primary school on the advice of her teacher.” Atty explained. As for the reason for choosing a Chinese primary school, it is because the Chinese primary school is better in discipline and curriculum. In addition, putting the child in an unfamiliar and language-sufficient environment can reduce Atty’s “arrogance” and learn more. The language has one more advantage. However, when asked about the difficulties  Atty had in learning Chinese, she hardly had any impression. She only remembered that on the first day of class at a Chinese primary school, the teacher spoke a lot of Chinese in front of her. Little Atty, who could not understand, asked “What you say just now?” after the teacher finished speaking. From the Minyi Chinese Elementary School in the elementary school, Chong Hwa Independent High School to Peking University, Atty studied in a Chinese education environment, and her life track was greatly changed by her exposure to Chinese.

As a non-Chinese attending a Chinese elementary school, you will be bullied or even discriminated against because of your race and skin color. When I was young, I heard “abunene”, “Why are you so dark, you must be very dirty”, but Atty said that this is only a few people’s actions, and most of them are nice. Yes, will always help her and support her. “Anyway, 99% of my current friends are Chinese.” Atty said.

The reason for choosing to study abroad is to broaden horizons. Atty believes that if a person stays in the same place all the time, what they see will be limited. When you go out, you will find that the ways of getting along with each other, the way of doing things, the work pattern, and the living habits are quite different. This may be the charm of studying abroad. As for why she chose China and Peking University, Atty said that there is no special reason for choosing to come to China, she just wants to study abroad. And I chose Peking University because Peking University gave scholarships, which is a very practical idea. So in the fall of 2015, Atty came to Peking University and started her university life.

In her freshman year, Atty participated in a leadership camp jointly organized by Jiaotong University, Peking University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It is a one-year project that faces freshmen from Peking University. Through this leadership camp, Atty set foot in Xi’an, Ningxia, Kyrgyzstan, Israel, Hong Kong and other places. In short, this leadership camp is to train participants to become leaders, to practice and serve in society. Atty said that the people she met during this event were a very important group of people in her life. Through this activity, Atty’s worldview was changed. “Many times, you feel that you understand a lot of things, you feel that you have suffered a lot, but in fact, there are more people who have lived harder than you. In this activity, you have to learn a lot, learn to deal with others, Cooperate to complete a project. There are many things worth learning in the process. For example, when we go to different places and countries and face the problem of language barriers, we must find ways to solve them; when we encounter various setbacks, we must find ways to overcome. We have to reflect on ourselves every day. I believe that those who have participated in this leadership camp will have great gains.”

When Atty was studying at Peking University, she worked for a period of time in the “Foreigner Research Association”. This is an organization spontaneously formed by a group of international students in Peking University, which is dedicated to interviewing foreigners in China about their views on various issues in China. Atty originally appeared on the scene occasionally to cooperate with the filming, but later went directly to the internship. As a foreigner, her main job at the “Foreigner Resaearch Association” is to be responsible for simple translation, and occasionally participate in discussions about the content of the filming.

After graduating, Atty worked directly in China and currently works as a user operation in TikTok Malaysia. In short, this job is to manage the talents in TikTok and cultivate influencers. To work in a fast-paced company, many things need to be completed within a limited time and various activities must be held for Internet Influencers and celebrities to cooperate. Such a working environment is bound to be hard, but Atty is still very happy to be able to deal with different people every day and see a different world.

Regarding interview skills, Atty said that it is necessary to investigate the company’s background, prepare the materials required for the interview, and find someone for a mock interview. In addition, there are some things to pay attention to: first, dress appropriately; second, be true to yourself, be honest, not humble, not proud, and have the courage to express yourself. Atty also mentioned that the biggest advantage of Malaysians is language, and the perspective of looking at things differently from Chinese, reminding younger students to make good use of this advantage.

To students who are about to graduate:

After graduation, you will start a new stage in your life. No matter how good your previous university grades and how outstanding your performance is, you are faced with completely different rules after entering the workplace. Always remember that no matter where you go, you must be modest. Teach, study hard, and be a down-to-earth person. The most important thing is that before you start working, you can go out to play because there is really no time after work!

04

Postscript: Because Atty is busy at work, we can’t directly talk to her face-to-face, and can only conduct interviews in the form of questionnaires. Atty took time to answer when she was busy, even though there were many questions, Atty took every question to answer carefully and wrote a lot of her own suggestions and opinions. This attitude of taking everything seriously is worth learning. From the interview process, it can be found that Atty is a cheerful, optimistic, confident, and loving life person. Because of this personality, she has created a colorful university life. Hope everyone can love life like Atty, and achieve their goals firmly and encourage each other.
