A grown-up cicada
Gifted with freedom and endless skies
Should have cried aloud and soared high
Yet in shadows, in sorrow it stays
Days quietly corrode
Weather in 2020 is absurd
On a chilly June afternoon
How shall it then shed innocence away?
A grown-up kangaroo
Armed with fists and muscles
Should have challenged the world and its peak
Yet mother’s pouch had been too cozy
Tarzan turned out a coward
Weather in 2020 is too warm
On a dry, desiccated meadow
How can precious tears be shed as sweat?
A grown-up Hakka girl
Granted with license and certificates
Should have pursued run-of-the-mill dreams
Yet before a crossroads she pauses
Was it the streetlights hesitant or the unbudging gas pedal
The world in 2020 is too crowded
Too much worry and anxiety
Future waits on the other side
Light is promised
But how much darkness is in between?
